Billboards have been around forever and in different forms that we see today!
The oldest know billboard was an ad posted in the Egypian city of Thebes over 3,000 years ago.
More recently:
1794 Lithography was invented making real posters possible.
1835 Jared Bell was making 9 x 6 foot advertising posters for the circus business.
1867 This was the year of the first known bill or poster rental.
1872 This was the year the International Bill Posters Association was formed.
1893 The first 24 sheet billboard was erected at the Paris Exposition.
1908 With the invention and sales of the Model T billboards soon sprang up.
1919 The Japanese Candy Company Glico introduced the building spanning billboard.
1925 In the US Burma Shave installed signs lining the highway.
1931 The Wall Drug Company goes nationwide with billboard advertising.
1960 The first mechanized billboard was built in Osaka, Japan.
1965 The Hgihway Beautification Act is passed after strong campaignig by Lady Bird Johnson, wife of the US President.
1971 The US passed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act banning cigarette advertisement from Televsion and Radio moving that business to Billboards.
1981 The US Supreme Court overturns a San Deigo billboard ban but leaves room for other cities and states to band billboards.
1987 Tobacco billboard advertising ino longer allowed on billboards in the entire US.
2007 The outdoor advertising business adopts plastic sheet posters replacing the century old paper posters.
Since that time electronic billboards have given way to Digital billboards and these have been banned in a great many communities in the US.
